A Geeky Milestone – We’re in PREVIEWS!

Posted in Behind The Scenes, Licensing, Zombies by admin

TrackBack Address.

We’ve been geeks our whole lives.  That means Aurora Model Kits, playing ”Name That Star Trek Episode” (based on the soundtrack alone), countless hours of time travel debate… and decades of weekly trips to the comic book store on new comics day.

As most comic book store regulars know, comics and related merchandise are solicited to your local shop via the monthly Diamond Comics PREVIEWS catalog.  And I’m thrilled to announce that for the first time ever HUMERUS products are in Previews! (August 2010 issue, page 420 – in the “SPOTLIGHT” at the bottom)

For geeks like us this is a HUGE milestone!  We’re so proud.  And if our moms were geeks they’d be proud too (Trust us Moms, this is good!)

Tell your local Comic Shop - to order from page 420

Humerus Magnets in Previews! Alert your comic shop!

They listed the magnet collection as “Zombie Humerus Magnets”  Even thought they mix in our Geek Hazards and Bacon designs with the awesome Zombie images.   Go figure.  We’ll call it a Humerus Variety Pack.

So visit, call or email your local comic book shop and tell them to order the HUMERUS MAGNETS !   (and then buy some when they come in, alright?  Don’t leave your poor shop owner hanging)

That’s AUGUST 2010 PREVIEWS, Page 420 – the “SPOTLIGHT” item at the bottom of the page.

THANKS!

Comic-Con 2010 – Awesomeness from the floor

It’s two weeks after Comic-Con and everybody else has posted their thoughts.  You’ve read about the awesome panels, the celebrities, the movie sneak-peeks, the stabbing, the costumes, (wait, did he say stabbing?)… how the con has spread throughout the city…  BUT have you heard what it’s like to spend all of Comic-Con weekend in a 10′x10′ square at one end of the exhibit hall?  I think not.

1,500 Bacon and Zombie T-Shirts loaded for Comic-Con
1,500 Bacon and Zombie T-Shirts loaded for Comic-Con
After months of planning, our Comic-Con 2010 adventure begins at 6am on Wednesday as we drive our loaded van and truck from LA to San Diego…  The rest of the day goes something like this… Starbucks, drive, traffic, drive, arrive.  The union unloads our stuff behind convention center in 30 seconds, and then we take 6 hours to build and stock our booth.  We realize we didn’t bring lunch, and pay $15 for chips and soda for 3 at the convention center. Sigh.
At 6 the Comic-Con Exhibit floor opens for Preview Night – and we’re off!
Zombie Hunters League

Zombie Hunters League T-Shirt

The notable first sale of the show is our new Zombie Hunters League shirt, and people are digging the new magnets by Ata-Boy and we feel like we’re off to a great start.  Preview night closes at 9, we decide to skip the local eats and head to the hotel – but we get stuck in construction generated traffic, arrive too late and the hotel’s restaurant is closed – we barely eat, and get to sleep well after midnight.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday all sort of blur together (damn, I should have written this two weeks ago)… but they go something like this:

Comic-Con costumegoers everywhere

Speed Racer at Ralph's Supermarket

First coffee at the hotel lobby, then drive from Hotel Circle, pick up lunch at Ralph’s supermarket (with other expert con-goers), drive to RESERVED PARKING under the Convention center just a half hour before the hall opens! (OMIGOD – this was a fantastic improvement by the Comic-Con staff and SD Convention Center this year THANK YOU).

When they open the hall doors and the faithful stream in it’s non-stop…  a steady flow of people coming by, stopping to laugh at our designs “Dude, check this out… Mr Piddles, Bringer of Death!”, picking up a couple of shirts or a poster,  and chatting with us about Zombies, Bacon, etc.

Nights were simply eat, drink, sleep, shower and repeat.

Zombie Con T-Shirt

Zombie Con T-Shirt a SELL OUT!

NEW STUFF – the new to Comic-Con shirts like Geek Hazards , Zombie Hunters League, and Zombie Con were all hits.   And our two new licensed properties SOLD OUT!  (the aforementioned magnets by Ata-Boy, and the popular BRAINS poster by NMR Distribution)

OLD FRIENDS – Sure we could make stuff and sell it online, never venturing off of the Humerus island headquarters… but we’d never get to meet the great people who we see year after year at the con…  There were online friends we knew we’d see like Katrina Hill the Action Flick Chick, Kristin Rielly aka @GeekGirls, Rebecca and James Hicks from Little Vampires, the mad geniuses at X-Sanguin and Misty from Morbidly Adorable

Here are just a few of the friends who surprised us with a booth visit this year…

1. The ultimate Chews Bacon Model 2. Loves his 2 year old CAUTION shirt and wants it autographed! 3. Fans stop by wearing Humerus Classics “Zombie Nixon” and “Zombie Jesus”

It was an amazing week, we were constantly busy, sold lots of stuff, made lots of friends, barely left our little 10′ square… and had a great time.

WE’LL BE BACK in 2011!

Officially Licensed by Humerus debuts at Comic-Con

We’re very excited to announce an exciting new direction for HUMERUS!   For the past 4 years we’ve been creating our zombie comedy and other designs and putting them on t-shirts, posters and stickers ourselves.   We’ve been having a great time offering them at Comic-Con, Wondercon and other events, (as well as at Humerus-Store.com) and we really love all your positive responses!  But deep down we wished we could do more…

The time has come for us to expand our “business model.”    We have begun to license our art out to other manufacturers.  People who get our sense of humor, can create new products and give them better distribution…

This year at San Diego Comic-Con International we PROUDLY DEBUT OUR FIRST TWO LICENSEES…

Ata-Boy (Magnets) :

Officially licensed HUMERUS product

HUMERUS magnets are now available from Ata-Boy.com

and NMR Distribution (poster):

Officially licensed By Humerus

Humerus BRAINS poster available from NMRdist.com

If you’re coming to San Diego Comic-Con this year be sure to stop by our booth (#736) to see the exciting new stuff!   (and if you have a store we’d love to tell you how you can order officially licensed HUMERUS products wholesale)

This is just the beginning…  We’ll be expanding to other products, and introducing new designs.   It’s an exciting new chapter.

WonderCon: We Almost Max-ed Out

It is only now, in the sober light of day, that we can tell this tale of caution from Wondercon 2010 experience… I beg you to heed our lesson well… for next time it may be you!
Team Humerus at WonderCon

Team Humerus at WonderCon 2010

Zombies, Comedy, T-Shirts, Posters… these are the foundation and cornerstones of our little business.   This year is our third year at WonderCon and things were looking up!   And here Humerus Mark tells our tale…

“As with any of these conventions, there were celebrities of various degrees in attendance.  G4′s Chris Gore‘s visit to our booth. Having passed right by us at two other shows, I was quite surprised by his interest in our stuff. We both appreciated his willingness to tweet about our zombie posters. I hope he enjoys the shirts…” (he did)

Of course, for anyone whose inventory is about 80% Zombie themed, one of the most desirable celebrities to meet would be Max Brooks.  Since we started this silly business of ours, we have been looking for a way to meet the author of “The Zombie Survival Guide” and “World War Z“, give him a free Zombie shirt, and maybe extract a positive comment or two. Of course, there has just been no opportunity to make that happen.

So, there we are Sunday, manning the booth, tired but happy. We have been fielding customers left and right. During a brief lull, we take a moment to check email, and update Facebook and Twitter. As we text away, a guy comes up, looks everything over, and says “Love your stuff. Thanks for spreading the word.” I thank him. Sensing my lack of recognition, he shakes my hand and introduces himself as Max Brooks. I thank him VERY MUCH for the kind words. I swing around to clue-in Brett, who is still Tweeting away. Brett looks up and Mr. Brooks repeats his compliment after which, he moves on. Then, Brett asks “Who was that?” I tell him. We stand there for a moment thinking about how neat that was. The moment passes and we start to get back to what we were doing.

Then, the stupid fog lifts…

Max? BROOKS!?! We didn’t get pictures? A quote? ANYTHING?

This happened at last year’s Wondercon with Carrie Fisher. I was at the opposite end of the booth and  Brett had no idea who he was serving. To be fair, she looks a lot different in person these days. Still, by the time we extracted heads from rear-ends, she was long gone. Wanting to avoid a repeat performance, Brett quickly grabbed a camera, a Brains shirt, and went off to track down the elusive Max Brooks. I am happy to say he succeeded, and we will be posting the picture soon to prove it.”   And here  it is:
Max Brooks likes our Zombie Shirts!

“Oh, sometime afterward, Chris Gore stopped by to chat for a second time. After he went on his way, we realized that, in the TWO times he was at our booth, we didn’t get pictures, or a quote.
Some geeks will never learn.”

Humerus Sighting: Chris Gore on Attack of the Show!

Chris Gore AOTS Brains Zombie tshirt

Our first TV appearance!

If you followed our Twitter feed during WonderCon you know one of the many people to stop by our booth was G4′s very own Chris Gore from Attack of the Show.    That was cool, but what happened a couple of days later was AWESOME… Chris Gore appeared on Attack of the Show wearing our zombie BRAINS tshirt

In the past we’d seen him at WonderCon and Comic-Con, but he’s never stopped to check us out.   Or so we thought.   Turns out he was very familiar with our shirts and just never had time to stop.   Well this year he made time to stop by, hang out and tell us how much he liked our zombie shirts and posters.  He picked up two of our Zombie Evolution Poster, and a bunch of tshirts.   All that was very cool, and we really appreciate all our customers…  but not only did he tweet about his new Zombie posters right at the moment – he took our shirt to the geek masses!   Chris, you’re awesome.

Here’s the whole clip with Chris Gore and Olivia Munn on Attack of the Show.

WonderCon 2010 – Our view from the floor…

WonderCon in San FranciscoWe’re just back from WonderCon in San Francisco, and a good time was had by all!    If  aren’t familiar, WonderCon is San Diego Comic-Con International‘s little sister.

This was our third year exhibiting at WonderCon and we’ve been excited to watch the show grow year after year.    Don’t take my “little sister” comment the wrong way.   The show is just younger, and about 1/3 the size of San Diego (Let’s face it EVERYTHING is dwarfed by SDCC).  But by no means  is this a rinky-dink convention – the comic publishers,  movie studios, autograph dealing celebrities, 501st Legion were all there…  And if what we witnessed from the show floor is any indication – there was a surge in fan attendance this year!

Panels from DC Comics, Chuck, Kick-Ass seemed to dominate conversation on the floor, there was a huge outdoor promo for Tron on Friday night, and a lot of demand for preview screenings of  the new Doctor Who and Kick-Ass…  But being exhibitors we have absolutely ZERO to report about anything more than 10 feet from our booth.

The Humerus booth at WonderCon

Things were hopping at the Humerus booth

But we can tell you that we had a blast in our little 10×10 space!  We debuted several new images that I’ll share in upcoming posts, got visited by a lot of returning customers, met some Twitter pals in person, and met tons of great fans and professionals – including our neighbors at the Capcom and Retro Rebel, as well as visits from G4′s Chris Gore and Zombie author Max Brooks! (each of those visits gets a seperat post coming up).

It really is more to talk about than just one post… so stay tuned for more…

Zombie Jesus Day

He is risen… RUN!

Zombie Jesus

Sweet Zombie Jesus

Every year on Easter Sunday people around the world celebrate the ressurection of Jesus… the world’s most famous zombie.

Now the bible doesn’t specifically use the world Zombie… but we all know that anyone who’s dead, buried and then gets up and starts walking around is probably a Zombie .

Oh sure, the naysayers will point out he’s not the FIRST zombie… that title goes to JC’s pal Lazarus who’d been dead for four days when not-yet-a-zombie-Jesus ressurected him. (see the Gospel of John, chapter 11)

”43And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.”

So he gets credit.  Jesus may not have been the first to walk out of his grave, but he’s certainly the most famous and should be celebrated for other reasons.

So why celebrate Zombie Jesus?  I mean, he wasn’t the first or last Zombie… then why?   Because after he died and rose up, Jesus went around for forty days chatting up his friends and family.    Notice “chatting up” not “eating up” – there’s a big difference.  He’s a positive role model for the undead everywhere!   If  more of the living dead would follow Zombie Jesus’ example the world would be a safer place.

So when you meet a zombie on the streets this Easter, be sure to wish them a Happy Zombie Jesus Day!

It could save your life.

Okay we’re trying something new.

We’ve got an idea for a new Zombie Shirt and we’re going to preview it here in development. This is the color test for the art of our new Twitter Zombie shirt…

Twitter Zombie Shirt Design

Twitter Zombie Shirt Design

SO?  What do you think? Would you buy/wear it? What color shirt would you prefer to see it on? (doesn’t have to be white – but were thinking a lighter color would be best).

We’re curious to get your feedback.  If this shirt gets the go signal you could see it debut at San Diego Comic-Con International in a few weeks.

(sorry about the watermarks – lawyers insist we protect our concepts)

Our Comic-Con History

In the midst of  all our preparations for San Diego Comic-Con International I’m flashing back (oh so far back) to 2006 – our f irst Comic-Con.

If you’ve ever been to San Diego for the premier pop culture event of the year you know how huge and overwhelming the massive  show can be.  In the summer of 2006 we were just starting to become Humerus and had only 1 shirt designed.  We went to Comic-con to road test our idea.

Our First Humerus Design

Our First Humerus Design

There was no time to make an official appearance , but we did get shirts printed and walked around the floor with the only 4  Zombie Nixon for President shirts we had.

That was our learning year.   In 2007 we had more designs, had some smaller shows under our belt, but couldn’t get a booth at the incredibly popular Comic-Con.    Again we walked the floor in our shirts – talking them up to people, handed out flyers.

The Godfather of all Zombies says "These are Fantastic!"

The Godfather of all Zombies says "These are Fantastic!"

We caught the attention of George Romero who paid us a great compliment - He reviewed our product sheet and said “These are Fantastic!”  I’m still proud of that undocumented quote.

Our first Comic-Con booth was rockin!

Our first Comic-Con booth was rockin!

They said it couldn’t be done, but last year,  thanks to a last minute  opportunity we got in!   We expanded our line even more – and the crowd responded!  We were the Zombie booth – with the big hit t shirt of the show - our Caution Zombie Crossing t shirt.  Four rockin’ days of hanging out on the floor talking Zombie Humor with Zombie fanatics from all walks of life!  We had a great time and were thrilled with the reaction to our stuff!

Now 2009 Comic-Con is almost here… (gulp) we’ve got a booth and we’ve got a lot to do…   new stuff coming soon!  I’ll keep blogging updates as the date approaches!
