Zombie Love from the Set of The Walking Dead

Check this out… the guys who do the awesome zombie makeup and special effects on AMC’s The Walking Dead love Humerus stuff! We’ve had reports before of our posters showing up on the set – which is very cool. But this blew our minds:

Co-Executive Producer Greg Nicotero was Directing some second-unit Zombie scenes for the show and threw one of our Brains shirts on a walker in full-make up. He then sent us the pic to share the Zombie Love!

No it’s not going to appear in the next season of The Walking Dead – but you gotta love this awesome photo! Thanks Greg! And keep on making the best show on television!

Licensing Expo Bound…

This week we’ll be at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas where artists and manufacturers collide!

People who make stuff love to have great art and images on their products and people who who make art love getting it to as many people as possible in as many ways as possible.    It’s a love-fest!

This the second year team Humerus is attending and we’re psyched! Last year we had such a great experience learning about the business, meeting people etc   – we even made connections that led to our first three licensing deals!

This year we’re coming with new images, new ideas and hoping to meet more fantastic people and learn more about the Licensing Business.   Maybe we’ll even make the connections that will bring the world more Humerus STUFF!

Footnote: in our incredibly un-scientific Facebook poll the #1 thing our fans want from Humerus next is Plush Toys (we hear you, we’ll try!)

iBama Revisited

Back around the 2008 election there was a lot of celebrating Obama’s victory… and we imagined the first tech-ready president dancing to his iPod in our iBama design.

The Prez is on an uptic this past week – ending the birth certificate drama, the comedic slaying of would-be-candidate Trump at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner and topping it off announcing the US finally got Osama Bin Laden… seems to us Mr. Obama might be dancing again…

Monsterpalooza 2011, or “BEAST in Show” (Sorry..)

So, in my last post, I talked about Wondercon 2011 from the point of view of relaxed attendee, as opposed to busy vendor. It was quite a refreshing experience. The very next weekend, we did it again in Burbank, CA when we attended Monsterpalooza 2011. In the three years this show has been running on the West Coast, Humerus has never had a booth. It was simply a matter of scheduling. As it fell too close to our commitment to Wondercon, we just never had the energy to do two shows on two consecutive weekends in different areas of the state. This is a good thing though, as Monsterpalooza is definitely a show you want to walk around and see!

For the uninitiated, Monsterpalooza is a gathering that celebrates monsters and creatures and the people who create them. We’re talking everything from the classic Universal Monsters, to Godzilla, and beyond. It revisits the 60′s Monster craze with tables full of Aurora model kits, Don Post Halloween masks, and classic horror movie posters. The celebrity guests run the gamut from Boris Karloff’s daughter, Sara, to Butch “Eddie Munster” Patrick. You know this is a serious Monster enthusiast convention when they have a panel devoted to the “men in suits”, the actors who have donned rubber and fur to play the screen’s most famous creatures. These are actors like Ricou Browning (“Creature from the Black Lagoon”), Doug Jones (“Pan’s Labyrinth”, “Hellboy”) and very special guest Haruo Nakajima (Godzilla films). Unknown by most of the general public, they were treated as royalty here.

A big draw of the show is the original artworks. There is a walk-through “museum” of monsters all created and on loan from professional make-up effects companies. Also, a great many of the booths were manned by individual artists who use the show as a means to display their imagination to a willing audience. As a guy who spent the better part of the last twenty years making beasts, blood and body parts for the special make-up effects industry, I have a special attachment to the monstrous. So, it should come as no surprise that this convention is a must-see. Not only is it a chance to meet up with old friends from the business, but like Wondercon before it, the show is a HUGE source of artistic inspiration. I could go on, but why bother when pictures will tell the tale so much better…

Wondercon 2011.. from the other side of the table

Well, April has come once again, and with it, another weekend of fun in San Francisco known as Wondercon! However, this time there was something decidedly different about this show. Sure, the crowds were larger than ever before. Yes, the celebrities were bigger and more plentiful. Of course, what was truly different about this year’s show, was that there was NO Humerus.

As we have discussed in previous posts, Humerus is stepping away from active participation in the retail end of the business. We are licensing now, which is giving us even more opportunities to create more fun stuff for you folks. As a matter of fact, you should see some of the new stuff we have cooked up for a new long form concept. ..but, I digress..

This is about Wondercon! Even though we decided not to do the show as a vendor, I knew I was going to miss being in that city and being around all that creativity. So, my wife, Erin, and I packed up the car and made our way North. As predicted, the show did not disappoint. Since there are plenty of news outlets on the web that have already done a much better job than I ever could covering the con, I will just stick to a few highlights.

Ohhh, look at all the people..

The crowds were amazing. The show is definitely shaping up to be the upstart younger sibling of the San Diego Comic-con. While we may not have been there selling, our products were represented. The good folks at Poster Planet were carrying our “BRAINS” poster. It was definitely in good company. I even saw a few of our shirts on some fellow attendees. Always nice to see !

Someone else is selling our stuff! YAY!

For those who might be thinking the Zombie craze is running out of steam, pretty much everything I saw convinces me otherwise.

As the art side of the Humerus Brain, I must say the whole weekend was a tremendous blast of creative energy. It was great to be able to walk around and interact with all of these vendors and artists and just soak up the vibe. Of course, even though the manufacture and retailing of our designs is now in much more capable hands, there is still one aspect of being a vendor at these shows which I really miss; interacting with our customers. It is always great getting your feedback! It helps us make our stuff better. So, I just want to reiterate that we WILL have a booth at this year’s San Diego Comic-con. If you are attending, look us up.

Okay, enough of that. As if Wondercon wasn’t enough, you should see where we went the next weekend….
